the best way for your test team to get up to speed is to have a good number of your best players spend 3 - 5 years in the nrl. the younger the better.
ellis has been very good in what is a poor forward pack. hell get even better next year.
i even think the RFL should subsidize these moves by putting in say 50,000 pounds a player to make the economics of an nrl move more feasible.
it was aussie players like ken kearney and harry bath playing in england learning from the best that helped australian RL catch up in the 60s.

| From my team (Leeds) I'd really like to see Mcguire have a go over here, infact I think he would fit in well with the Tigers style of play and he would benefit from a few seasons in the NRL, I also think Smith would have gone well if he hadnt have decided to bugger off to the Rah Rah's.
I always new Ellis would make it in the NRL as he has the perfect type of game for it.
Burgess would go very well IMO and should do it for the sake of his career as he is now in a very poor Bradford side!

| The key thing is age. I suspect Tansey will never be a world-beater, but will probably have learned a lot from his spell with the Roosters.
I've said for a long time that juniors ought to go to Aus for a year if they can, as the coaching and standard they will play at will be far better than anything in England. IMO that's where RFL support in sending a crop of juniors to Aus every year would be well worth it.
The problem with a lot of British players will be that 'stars' in England would o take massive pay cuts to get a contract in the NRL where they will - rightly - be viewed as high risk. McGuire's a classic case. He'd walk into any SL side, but would be seen as a risk by any NRL side due to his weaknesses like defence, long-kicking and decision-making. I think he could make it and improve out of sight in the NRL, but an NRL side would have to take a risk and McGuire a big pay cut (at least initially).
In terms of taking a pay cut, Ellis (and Morley before him) were probably the exceptions that prove the rule. Most of the others who've had a go have been fringe players in SL.

| Ellis has done well in defence, he has not blended into the attack as well as he probably can but that may come in time.
He is a tackling machine in the mould of Hindmarsh.

Ellis is one of the few players not predominantly motivated by money, he is motivated by bettering himself and ambition. Trinity offered him a better deal then what was on the table at Leeds but he wanted to win things.
This attitude has probably benefited him throughout his career. I think that is why he is making a decent go of it in the NRL. He has always been a monster in defence, but at Trinity he had the licence to play a bit too, that side of his game did not get utilised as much when he went to Leeds because of the other game breakers in their squad but now doubt give the opportunity he will shine in attack too down under.

thats why they should be respected even more is they have taken a pay cut to test themselves.

Don't agree with that. The last few years has seen a new McGuire. He has progressed massively from a player that backed up breaks and scored for fun to a player that is creating tries for his team mates

I agree he's progressed into a more complete player, I just think he has more in him, and a few years in the NRL could bring that out.
Unfortunately he's on a good whack at leeds and I cant see him taking a pay cut. Having said that I reckon with the pound/dollar situation at the moment it isn't as big a pay cut as it would have been in recent years, and the lifestyle over here may tempt some players to give it a go.
